GIG Contracts in the UK: What Ukrainians Need to Know

GIG Contracts in the UK: What Ukrainians Need to Know

A GIG contract is a flexible way of working where an individual provides specific services or completes particular tasks for a company without a traditional employment contract. For example, a designer may be paid per project, a marketer for a specific scope of work, or an IT specialist on an hourly or monthly basis. In the UK, this type of arrangement is often connected with working as self-employed or as an independent contractor.

The name of the contract does not automatically determine a person’s status. HMRC can look at how the relationship actually works, including who controls the work, whether the individual can work for other clients, who takes responsibility for the results and who carries the financial risk. A contractor who is effectively working like an employee may therefore have a different tax position.

This can be particularly important for Ukrainians living in London who work for clients or companies in Ukraine. If you live and work in the UK, receiving payments into a Ukrainian bank account does not automatically mean that the income is taxable only in Ukraine. Your place of residence, tax residence and where the work is actually performed can all affect your UK tax obligations.

If you work under a GIG contract in the UK, keep your contract, invoices, payment records and documents relating to business expenses from the beginning. These records can help you report your income correctly through Self Assessment and support your position if HMRC asks questions. If your work involves both the UK and Ukraine, it is important to check the tax rules in both countries before starting the arrangement.
