Do You Need to Register for Self Assessment If You Have a Full-Time Job?

Do You Need to Register for Self Assessment If You Have a Full-Time Job?

Having a full-time job does not automatically mean you are outside Self Assessment. Your employer may already deduct Income Tax from your salary through PAYE, but HMRC also looks at income you receive from other activities. A weekend side job, freelance work, online content, or income from renting out property can create a separate tax reporting obligation.

One figure is particularly important: £1,000 of gross trading income. If you earn more than £1,000 from self-employment, casual services or other trading activities in a tax year, you generally need to register for Self Assessment. This is based on your gross income before expenses, not the profit you have left after paying your costs. There is also a separate £1,000 property allowance for rental income, subject to the relevant rules.

And having a PAYE salary does not simply cancel out the extra income. Your employment income and additional income are considered together when working out your overall tax position. For example, someone earning £30,000 from a full-time job and another £3,500 from weekend freelance work may need to report the additional income through Self Assessment. So if you have a salary plus a side income, it is worth checking the rules before assuming your employer is handling everything for you.
