Quarterly Reporting under MTD: How Does It Work?

Quarterly Reporting under MTD: How Does It Work?

Once you join Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, you must submit 4 quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software. These are not tax returns—they are summary reports of your income and expenses for each quarter.

Quarterly updates do not calculate the tax you owe. Instead, they provide HMRC with an overview of your business income throughout the year. At the end of the tax year, you will submit a Final Declaration to confirm your figures and complete your tax obligations.

For most taxpayers using standard quarterly periods, the submission deadlines are:

  • 7 August 2026
  • 7 November 2026
  • 7 February 2027
  • 7 May 2027

Need help with MTD? Capital Accountants can set up your software, manage your quarterly submissions, and keep your business fully compliant with HMRC.
