What to Do If You Haven’t Received Your UTR?

What to Do If You Haven’t Received Your UTR?

If you have registered for Self Assessment but haven’t received your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), don’t submit a new application straight away. HMRC normally sends your UTR by post after registration, but processing can sometimes take longer. Your UTR may also already be available through your HMRC online account or app.

First, check your online HMRC account and any letters you have received. If you still cannot find your UTR, use HMRC’s online services to check your Self Assessment registration status. If your registration has been processed but the UTR is still missing, contact HMRC and ask them to confirm the status of your registration.

Also check whether you have previously registered for Self Assessment. If you already had a UTR in the past, you may need to use your existing tax record rather than register again. Keeping your registration details and HMRC correspondence can also make it much easier to resolve any delays
