Important UK Tax Deadlines: What Businesses Need to Know
Missing a tax deadline is more than an inconvenience. HMRC can charge penalties and interest, so businesses need to know both when a return is due and when the tax payment must be made.
Key deadlines include:
- Corporation Tax — usually due 9 months and 1 day after the end of the accounting period.
- Company Tax Return — generally due within 12 months after the end of the accounting period.
- Self Assessment — the online tax return and payment are generally due by 31 January following the end of the tax year.
- Payment on Account — normally due on 31 January and 31 July.
- PAYE and National Insurance — normally due by the 22nd of the following month when paying electronically under a monthly payroll schedule.
- VAT Return — normally due one calendar month and 7 days after the end of the VAT accounting period.
- Confirmation Statement — every company must file one at least once every 12 months, normally within 14 days after the end of its review period.
Exact dates can vary depending on your accounting period, VAT scheme, payroll schedule and individual circumstances.
The best approach is simple: check your deadlines early, keep your records organised and avoid leaving your tax obligations until the last minute.
