For sole traders and landlords within the scope of the new rules, the process starts with keeping digital records of income and expenses and ends with submitting an annual tax return and paying the tax due. Understanding each stage can help you avoid mistakes and prepare for the end of the tax year.

The first step is to keep digital records of income and expenses using MTD-compatible software. These records are used to prepare quarterly updates, which are sent to HMRC every three months. These updates are summaries, not full tax returns. They help you monitor your financial position throughout the year, but they do not complete your annual tax reporting obligations.

After the tax year ends, you need to review your records, make any necessary adjustments, claim applicable tax reliefs and allowances, and include other sources of taxable income. One important detail is that HMRC removed the requirement for a separate End of Period Statement (EOPS) under the updated MTD design. Instead, you must finalise your information and submit your annual tax return using compatible software. This is why quarterly updates should never be mistaken for the final confirmation of your tax position.

Once your annual tax return has been submitted, HMRC generates your final Self Assessment tax bill. MTD does not change the usual tax payment rules: in most cases, the tax must be paid by 31 January following the end of the relevant tax year. Capital Accountants can help you organise your digital records, review your reporting and manage every stage of MTD — from the first entries to your final tax calculation.

Moving to Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax involves much more than submitting four quarterly updates to HMRC.
