Maybe you entered the wrong figure, forgot an allowable expense or left out some information. The good news is that discovering an error does not automatically mean you will be fined. In most cases, you can amend your return within 12 months of the Self Assessment filing deadline, and HMRC will recalculate your tax bill based on the correction<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important part is not to simply leave the mistake there. If the correction means you owe more tax, your updated bill will show the additional amount and any impact on your Payments on Account. If you overpaid, you may be able to claim a refund. And if the normal amendment window has already passed, there may still be other ways to correct the position, depending on whether you underpaid or overpaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tax return does not have to be perfect forever \u2014 but it does need to be corrected when you discover an error.
